A frill gathered by hand is rarely as regular as a bought trim. That is especially true along long edges, where differences in gathering quickly add up.

It is sewn in like any insertion trim: place the tape between two fabric layers, stitch close beside it, turn. The frill then faces outwards and the seam is hidden.

At corners and curves, add small extra pleats. Do not pull the trim taut, or the frill loses its body and the edge draws in.

How do I handle curves?

Add small extra pleats rather than stretching the tape. The frill then stays even and the curve lies flat, instead of drawing in and pulling the fabric out of shape.

Can I stitch ruffle trim on instead of sewing it in?

Yes. Topstitch the carrier tape close to the edge onto the fabric; the frill then stands away from the seam. That is the simpler option when an edge is already finished.
