Because tulle is translucent, the trim looks different depending on the background. On dark fabric it stands out clearly, on pale fabric it blends in and adds only texture.

Tulle does not fray, being a net. The edges can therefore be left raw, which simplifies construction and preserves the light character.

When sewing, do not stretch the trim and work with a fine needle. Coarse needles leave visible holes in the net that cannot be closed again.

Several layers on top of each other create volume without weight. That is used on skirts and petticoats, where a single layer would have too little body.

No, tulle is a net fabric and does not fray. You can leave the edge raw, which preserves the light character of the trim.

Which needle do I need for tulle?

A fine universal needle, size 70 or 80. Coarse needles tear holes in the net that stay visible and cannot be closed.

How do I stop the tulle rippling?

Sew without tension and support the trim with your hand instead of pulling it. With very light qualities, a strip of tissue paper under the seam helps; tear it away afterwards.
