Cuffing has to do two things: stretch far enough for a head to pass through the neckline, and return to shape afterwards. Heike is worked firmly enough for that without feeling hard.

Because the colour numbers apply across the ranges, there is no need to compare shades on screen. Anyone sewing a jumper from Eike takes Heike in the same number and gets the same tone – even though the two fabrics look different, because the surface is different.

Cut it shorter than the opening, usually by a fifth to a quarter. While attaching it the cuffing is stretched and the fabric stays flat. A jersey needle prevents skipped stitches.

Good to know

Does the cuffing look exactly like the sweat?

The shade is the same, the surface is not. Cuffing is ribbed and reflects light differently from smooth sweat, so the same number can appear minimally different depending on the light.

How much cuffing do I need for a shirt?

For a neckline, two sleeves and the hem, half a metre is usually enough in adult sizes. Children's clothes need considerably less; leftovers can be used for hats.

Can I sew cuffing as a main fabric?

Yes, for hats, snoods or close fitting sleeves for instance. Bear in mind that the fabric pulls in strongly – a pattern meant for jersey turns out noticeably tighter in cuffing.
