Marled jersey is made from yarn blended out of several colour depths. Close up you see the individual flecks, from a distance a mixed shade with depth – livelier than a flat solid and more forgiving in daily use.

Because the surface is already slightly varied, small marks and signs of wear show less. That makes marled fabric a practical choice for children's clothes and everyday shirts.

It also works well as a companion fabric: calm enough not to steal the show from a print, yet less severe than a pure solid.

When cutting, check the grain direction, as the marl can look different depending on the light. Sew with a jersey needle and a stretch stitch.

Wash the fabric before cutting, as cotton shrinks. After that the fit stays reliable, and the marl changes hardly at all even after many washes.

The yarn is spun from fibres of different colour depths before knitting. The result is not a flat surface but one with fine variations in lightness.

Which cuffing suits marled jersey?

Safest is one in the darker of the blended colours. Marled cuffing works too, provided the marl is similarly fine – otherwise the two surfaces look restless side by side.

Is marled jersey thinner than solid?

No, the weight depends on the quality, not on the marling. Check the fabric weight if you need a particular thickness.
