Cotton takes colour strongly, which is why the choice is widest here. The binding behaves like the fabric it finishes and can be sewn with the same needle.

Binding is done in two steps: first stitch one side to the fabric edge, then fold the binding over and topstitch from the other side. Sewing both layers in one pass saves time but demands accuracy.

At corners, form a mitre: sew up to the corner, fold the binding up, fold it back down and carry on. That gives a clean angle instead of a bunched edge.

Pre wash the binding if the finished piece will be washed hot. Cotton shrinks, and an unwashed binding gathers the bound edge later.

Do I need to pre wash cotton bias binding?

Yes, if the finished piece will be washed. Otherwise the binding contracts in the first wash and gathers the bound edge while the fabric beside it stays unchanged.

Which width do I need?

Narrow bindings for inner edges and fine work, wider ones for quilts and decor. The stated width usually refers to the unfolded tape; about a quarter of it stays visible once bound.
