Unlike jersey binding it brings genuine recovery. That is crucial on leg and arm openings that have to sit without digging in or sliding.

While attaching, the binding is stretched and the fabric guided flat. How much depends on the piece: on a leg opening the tension may be considerably higher than on a hem.

Many qualities have a decorative edge, scalloped or patterned for instance. It stays visible on the outside after binding and replaces any further trimming.

Sew with zigzag, a stretch stitch or a coverstitch. A straight stitch snaps as soon as the edge is stretched and cancels out the elasticity of the binding.

How does it differ from jersey bias binding?

Elastic binding contains rubber threads and actively pulls back. Jersey binding only stretches with the fabric without recovering. For lingerie and swimwear you need that recovery.

How much should I stretch while attaching?

It depends how firmly the edge should sit. Considerably on leg openings, only slightly on hems. Test on a scrap to see how much tension feels comfortable.

Which stitch should I use?

Zigzag, a stretch stitch or a coverstitch. A straight stitch breaks when stretched and cancels the elasticity, so the edge splits open later.
