Satin is smoother and softer than cotton. The binding therefore wraps around curves particularly smoothly, but also slips more easily while sewing.

Clips instead of pins and a fine needle help. Pins leave visible holes in satin that do not disappear – so pin only within the seam allowance.

The cut edges fray badly. Seal the start and end with a flame if the binding is polyester, or fold it over and stitch it down.

Press only at low temperature and with a cloth in between. Satin otherwise develops shiny marks that cannot be removed.

Why does satin binding slip while sewing?

Because the surface is smooth and offers little friction. Clips, a fine needle and slow sewing keep it in place; a walking foot helps as well.

How do I seal the ends?

With polyester satin a brief touch of flame is enough. With cotton satin, fold the end over and stitch it, or it frays within a short time.

Is satin binding suitable for baby blankets?

Yes, that is a classic use. Choose a soft quality and stitch the edge down securely all round so nothing works loose and no thread can catch.
