Thirty millimetres is the most used webbing width. It carries enough for shopping and shoulder bags, sits comfortably in the hand and fits most common buckles and rings.

This width is a good compromise. It spreads the load better than a narrow tape but adds less bulk at seams and folds than a wide one – which is why it is the width most often quoted in bag patterns.

For shoulder straps, padding is worthwhile if the bag gets heavy. A piece of neoprene or wadding under the tape takes the pressure off the shoulder.

For adjustment, ladder locks or sliders are used. Make sure the inner width matches the tape, otherwise the setting slips under load.

Sew with a strong needle and a box stitch at fixing points. With several layers, a levelling tool helps the machine run cleanly over the thick spot.

Why is 30 mm so widespread?

Because the width is a good compromise: strong enough for bags, but not as bulky as wider tapes. That is why most bag patterns specify this width.

Do I need padding on a shoulder strap?

With heavy bags, yes. A piece of wadding or neoprene under the tape spreads the pressure and makes carrying considerably more comfortable.

How do I sew several layers of webbing?

With a strong needle, a longer stitch and slowly. A levelling tool under the presser foot stops the machine stalling or skipping stitches at the thick spot.
