The most important criterion is width. Buckles and rings are made for a particular tape width; a tape that is too narrow slips, one that is too wide will not pass through. Measure before buying.

With side release buckles, the design matters too: some adjust on one side only, others on both. For rucksack straps, two sided adjustment is more comfortable; for simple fastenings the basic version is enough.

Metal looks more refined and takes more strain, plastic is lighter and does not rust. For bags that get wet and for children's items, plastic is often the more practical choice.

When attaching, the same rule applies as for webbing: a box stitch at the fixing points, so the pull is distributed and the seam does not tear at one spot.

How do I identify the right size?

By the tape width. A buckle for thirty millimetres only fits a tape of that width. Measure the tape before buying rather than relying on appearance.

Metal or plastic?

Metal is sturdier and looks more refined, plastic is lighter and does not rust. For children's items and anything that gets wet, plastic is usually more practical.

How do I attach a D ring securely?

Pass the tape through the ring, fold it back and sew a box stitch just below. The ring then sits firmly and the pull spreads across several lines of stitching.
