Korkstoff

Cork fabric consists of thinly sliced cork bark on a textile backing. It is light, can be wiped clean and does not fray – a plant based alternative to leather that suits bags, purses, cases and appliqué.

The surface shows the natural grain of the cork bark, so every piece looks slightly different. Small variations in colour and visible pores are not a fault but part of the material.

Cork is sewn like faux leather: with a universal or leather needle, a slightly longer stitch and clips instead of pins, because needle marks remain visible. A teflon foot stops the surface from catching on the presser foot.

No edge finishing is needed as the edges stay closed. If you want to fold cork, crease it carefully – sharp folds can break the surface open.

Good to know

Is cork fabric waterproof?

It is water repellent and can be wiped clean, but not waterproof like a film. For bags that is enough; in heavy wet conditions the material should not stay soaked.

Do I need to finish cork edges?

No, the cut edge stays closed and does not fray. You can topstitch the edge for a neat finish, but that is purely a visual decision.

Why does every piece look different?

Because cork is a natural product. Grain, pores and shade vary from length to length. If you need several pieces to match, cut them side by side from one piece.
