An embroidery machine runs two threads: the embroidery thread on top, the bobbin thread below. What you see is the upper thread; what carries the embroidery is how the two work together. A bobbin thread that is too thick pushes through and makes the reverse hard.

Bobby Syn is kept fine for that reason. It adds little bulk, so the reverse stays flat and the design sits cleanly in the fabric. The large spools last across many designs — which spares you a change in the middle of the work.

Choose the colour to match the fabric, not the design: black under dark fabrics, white under light ones. Otherwise the bobbin thread shows at the edges, especially under dense satin stitches.

Good to know

Can I use bobbin thread as the upper thread?

No. It is finer and twisted differently from embroidery thread, and it breaks under the load the upper thread carries. It would not look right either — it is built to stay unseen, not to shine.

White or black?

Follow the fabric, not the thread. White under light fabrics, black under dark ones. The bobbin thread always pulls up slightly at the edges, and a wrong choice shows there immediately.

Why are large spools worth it?

Because changing a bobbin mid-design always leaves a mark. The longer a spool lasts, the more rarely that happens — across a day of many designs it makes a noticeable difference.
