The shine comes from a metallic coated film wound around a core. This construction makes the thread more sensitive to friction and tension than smooth polyester thread.

Metallic thread therefore needs a calmer machine setting: lower speed, slightly reduced tension and a metallic needle with a larger, smoother eye. Thread breaks then stay the exception.

Do not stitch large areas entirely in metallic. The stitch density strains the thread and the design turns stiff. As an outline, lettering or highlight it comes into its own.

Why does metallic thread break so easily?

Because the metallic film is wound around a core and splits under friction. Lower speed, less tension and a metallic needle usually solve the problem.

Can I stitch large areas in metallic?

Better not. The high stitch density strains the thread and makes the design stiff. As an outline, lettering or highlight, metallic works far better.

How do I wash embroidery with metallic thread?

Cool, inside out and without tumble drying. Friction and heat damage the coating; with gentle care the shine lasts a long time.
