The pressed pile makes panne velvet look lighter and more fluid than classic velvet. The fabric is usually stretchy, falls into soft folds and shimmers differently with every movement.

Because the sheen depends on the pile direction, cutting in one direction is essential. Even two pieces cut in opposite directions look like two different colours in the finished item.

Sew with a jersey needle and a stretch stitch. Press at most from the reverse with a cloth in between – direct heat destroys the pressed pile permanently.

How does panne velvet differ from ordinary velvet?

The pile is pressed flat, which makes the fabric shinier and lighter in drape. Classic velvet stands more upright, looks more matt and feels heavier.

Is panne velvet stretchy?

Usually yes, because the base is a knit. That makes close fitting costumes easier, but calls for a stretch stitch so the seam does not tear when worn.

How do I care for panne velvet?

Wash cold and gently or have it cleaned, do not spin and dry flat. Heat and pressure distort the pressed pile.
