An eyelet consists of two parts: the eyelet itself and the washer. Both are pressed together with a tool and enclose the fabric between them.

Reinforce the spot beforehand with interfacing or a second layer of fabric. Without that, the fabric can tear around the eyelet, particularly on thin materials and under heavy strain.

The size depends on the cord: it should slide through easily but without too much play. On curtains the eyelet size also determines whether the pole fits through.

Which eyelet size do I need?

Large enough for the cord or pole to slide through easily, but no larger. Oversized eyelets weaken the fabric unnecessarily, while ones that are too small make threading considerably harder.

Do I need a tool to fit them?

Yes. Eyelets are set with pliers or a setting tool that presses eyelet and washer together. Without a tool no permanently secure connection can be made.

How do I stop the fabric from tearing?

Reinforce the spot with interfacing or a second layer before setting the eyelet. That spreads the strain over a larger area and the eyelet sits firmly without threads giving way.
