Size and length determine the use. Short needles sit more steadily in the hand and suit precise stitches, long ones pass through several layers faster and have the advantage when basting.

The eye has to match the thread. Too small an eye frays the thread, too large a one leaves visible holes in fine fabric. For thick threads and wool there are needles with a long eye.

For an invisible finish – at a turning gap, for instance – use ladder stitch with a fine needle. The stitches run alternately inside the folded edges and disappear as you pull them closed.

Store needles dry. Spots of rust roughen the point, and a rough needle pulls threads in fine fabric instead of gliding through cleanly.

Which needle should I use to attach buttons?

A medium size with an eye your thread passes through without tugging. For thick buttons and several strands a slightly stronger needle is worthwhile so it does not bend.

How do I close a turning gap invisibly?

With ladder stitch: the stitches run alternately in the upper and lower folded edge. As you pull them closed the thread disappears inside and the seam cannot be seen.

Why does my thread fray when hand sewing?

Usually the eye is too small or rough. Try a needle with a larger eye and thread it the way the thread comes off the reel – against the twist it frays faster.
