The type decides how the zip feels and looks. Coil is fine and flexible, the right choice for sweat, jersey and light jackets. Moulded has chunky plastic teeth, runs firmly and stands up to wind and weather – softshell, rain jacket, children's anorak. Metal is the heaviest and belongs where it is meant to show.

Measure from stopper to stopper, not counting the tape above and below. If your length is not listed, take the next one up – an open end zip can only be shortened from the bottom, and that is where the pin box sits.

Coil or moulded?

Coil when the zip should move softly with the fabric – sweat jacket, dress, light jacket. Moulded when it has to be tough and may show: softshell, outdoor, children's wear.

Can I shorten an open end zip?

Only from the bottom, and the pin box has to be moved – that needs tools. It is easier to buy the right length.
