An appliqué has to lie flat before it is sewn. Pins only help so far: they lift the fabric, leave holes and get in the way exactly where the presser foot travels. A bonding web holds the piece flat in place until the seam is in.

Thermofix goes between the two layers and is ironed on. The bond is permanent — on small appliqué without any stitching, on hard-working pieces as preparation for the seam. Edges and hems can be bonded instead of sewn too.

Work with baking paper or a pressing cloth: the web melts, and anything reaching beyond the fabric edge otherwise sticks to the iron. A soiled soleplate passes the residue straight on to the next pale fabric.

Does the bond hold without stitching?

On small appliqué, yes. Large areas and hard-working pieces should still be sewn — the bonding web then holds the fabric flat, so the seam runs more cleanly than it would over pins.

Why do I need baking paper?

Because the web melts under the iron. Anything beyond the fabric edge sticks to the soleplate and later ends up on the next pale fabric. The paper catches exactly that.

Can I bond hems with it?

Yes, that is the second use besides appliqué. A narrow strip is enough for a quick hem without stitching; on frequently washed pieces an additional seam remains the more durable answer.
