Sulky Ultra Solvy – for free-standing lace and raised work

At 80 microns, Ultra Solvy is the sturdy water-soluble film from Sulky. It can be hooped on its own and stitched directly — with no fabric underneath. That is how free-standing lace, badges and raised work are made.

Free-standing lace has no carrier fabric: the design consists only of threads locking into one another. For that to work, the backing must absorb the entire pull of stitching and then vanish without a trace. A sturdy water-soluble film is made for exactly this.

Ultra Solvy is considerably stronger than the thin Solvy. For particularly dense designs, layer two sheets and hoop them together. After stitching, tear the film away roughly and dissolve the rest in warm water.

How much film you wash out decides the handle: rinse thoroughly and the lace turns soft; leave a little in the design and it keeps more body. For badges meant to hold their shape, the second option is often the better one.

How many layers does free-standing lace need?

Usually two, hooped together. A single layer can tear under dense designs before the pattern closes. The design file also has to be drawn for free-standing work, so that every thread links up.

How soft does the finished lace become?

You control that while washing out. A thorough rinse in warm water gives soft, draping lace. Deliberately leave some film in the design and it stays stiffer and holds its shape better.

How does it differ from Fabri Solvy?

Ultra Solvy is a film, while Fabri Solvy feels like a woven fabric and shrugs off the warmth of the machine bed. Both suit lace; which fits better depends on the design and on how you like to work.
