Minky fleece is finer and more velvety than ordinary fleece. The surface is often embossed, with dots or waves for instance, which makes the fabric look soft as well as feel it – popular for baby blankets, soft toys and cushions.

The short, dense pile feels like velvet and sits pleasantly against the skin. It is lighter than cuddle fleece and less bulky, which makes it practical for soft toys and small sewing projects.

When cutting, mind the pile direction, because the surface reflects light differently depending on which way it lies. Laying all pieces the same way saves trouble later.

Minky likes to slip while sewing. Clips instead of pins, a walking foot and a slightly longer stitch hold the layers together. Edges need no finishing.

Why does minky slip while sewing?

The fine pile acts like a glide layer between the fabrics. Clips, a walking foot and slow sewing bring it under control; if needed, embroidery stabiliser underneath helps too.

Is minky suitable for babies?

Yes, it is often used for exactly that. The fabric is soft and washable. Make sure it does not shed loose fibres and wash it before first use.

Does minky lose its pile in the wash?

Hardly, with gentle washing. Wash cool, without fabric softener, and dry in the air. High temperatures fuse the polyester fibres and the pile turns dull.
