Water repellent means that drops bead up instead of soaking in straight away. A fabric is only truly waterproof once the seams are sealed, because every needle hole is a possible entry point. For bags and cushions the repellent finish is entirely sufficient.

When sewing the rule is: as few needle holes as possible. Pin within the seam allowance or work with clips, and use a slightly longer stitch. The edges barely fray because the weave is dense; finishing them neatly still keeps the inside tidy.

For bags it is worth reinforcing the base and the straps, because that is where the load sits. Webbing, a second layer of fabric or a firm interlining stops the seam from tearing out over time.

Is outdoor fabric waterproof?

It is finished to repel water, so drops bead up. A garment only becomes truly waterproof with sealed seams, because water can enter at every needle hole. For bags the finish is enough.

Which needle and thread do I need?

A universal or denim needle in a stronger size and tear resistant polyester thread. Lengthen the stitch a little, then you make fewer holes and the seam still stays strong.

Can outdoor fabric be washed?

Usually yes, at a low temperature and without fabric softener, as softener impairs the water repellent finish. Check the care instructions with the article, they differ depending on the finish.
