Unlike cotton, viscose does not stand away from the body but falls into soft folds. That makes it ideal for designs meant to show movement, but it also means the fabric likes to slip while sewing. Place a non slip cloth underneath when cutting and work with plenty of pins or clips.

Viscose is available as a woven fabric for blouses and dresses and as a jersey with stretch for shirts and tunics. Sew with a fine needle and fine thread; on woven viscose a narrow rolled hem keeps the edge from becoming heavy. Viscose is sensitive to heat, so press at a moderate temperature.

Why does viscose slip while cutting?

The smooth surface offers little grip, so the fabric travels under the scissors or rotary cutter. A non slip cloth underneath, weights instead of pins and cutting in a single layer solve the problem reliably.

Does viscose shrink in the wash?

It can shrink a little, especially with heat. Wash the fabric before cutting and follow the care instructions given with the article – washing cool and drying flat protects the material.

Is viscose stretchy?

As a woven fabric hardly at all, as a jersey noticeably so. Check which version your pattern asks for: a design for knits needs that stretch, while a blouse pattern works without it.
