Many designs are intended for stretchy fabrics. That makes them beginner friendly, because knits forgive small inaccuracies and the finished pieces still fit even if the seam allowance is not exact to the millimetre.

For stretchy fabrics you need a jersey needle and an elastic stitch. An overlocker is convenient but not essential – a narrow zigzag on a domestic machine is quite enough for most seams.

Suitable fabrics are found in the jersey and french terry categories, matching cuffing under cuffing fabric. Make sure the colours go together before you cut.

Do I need an overlocker for these patterns?

No. Stretchy seams also work with a narrow zigzag or the stretch stitch on a domestic machine. An overlocker is faster and finishes the edge at the same time, but it is not a requirement.

Which fabrics suit the designs?

Mostly stretchy knits such as jersey or french terry. The exact recommendation is given with the pattern, because fit and ease are calculated for a particular amount of stretch.

Are the patterns suitable for beginners?

Many of them are. Designs without fastenings, with few pieces and in stretchy fabric make a good start, because small deviations while sewing do not show immediately.
