Three millimetres is the most common fine cord size. It runs easily through channels and eyelets, still takes decent strain and suits hoods, bags, drawstring backpacks and fastenings.

This size is the compromise between fineness and grip. It is thin enough for small eyelets but thick enough to hold comfortably.

For drawstring backpacks it is the classic choice, as it doubles as a carrying strap without cutting in too much. For heavy bags a thicker quality is still worthwhile.

Measure the length generously: for a drawstring, allow twice the channel length plus extra for holding and knotting. Cord bought too short cannot be extended.
