This size is the compromise between fineness and grip. It is thin enough for small eyelets but thick enough to hold comfortably.

For drawstring backpacks it is the classic choice, as it doubles as a carrying strap without cutting in too much. For heavy bags a thicker quality is still worthwhile.

Measure the length generously: for a drawstring, allow twice the channel length plus extra for holding and knotting. Cord bought too short cannot be extended.

Cord stoppers and end caps are available to match this size. They stop the cord disappearing into the channel and give the end a neat finish.

Does this size fit through eyelet patches?

Usually yes, three millimetres is the standard assumption. When in doubt, check the details with the patch, as openings vary between manufacturers.

What stops the cord disappearing into the channel?

A knot at the end or a cord stopper. For washing it also helps to tie the cord together briefly so the drum movement does not pull it in.
