Twisted cords are made by twisting several strands together. That gives the surface its characteristic spiral structure, which catches light differently from a smoothly braided cord.

Take care when cutting: a twisted cord unwinds at the open end immediately. Wrap the spot with tape before cutting and secure the end straight afterwards.

End caps, a firm knot or, with synthetic fibre, a brief touch of flame will secure it. Without securing, the twist gradually unravels along the whole length.

At this size the cord still passes through most eyelets while working as a visible design element – which is why it is the most widely chosen option.

Why does the cord unwind at the end?

Because the strands are held together only by the twist. As soon as the end is open the tension releases. Secure it immediately with a knot, end cap or tape.

Does 6 mm fit through ordinary eyelets?

Usually yes, but only just. Check the inner width before buying – twisted cords bulk up slightly more than smooth ones of the same size.

What is this size good for?

Drawstrings on bags, handles, tiebacks and decorative work. It is strong enough to carry and fine enough to pass through hardware.
