Basting thread should hold just enough to keep the layers in place – and come out again effortlessly afterwards. That is why it is loosely twisted and tears easily.

That is exactly the difference from sewing thread. A firm thread would have to be unpicked and leaves marks when pulled; basting thread tears before it damages the fabric.
Basting pays off wherever pins are not enough: on curves, at matching points, in set in sleeves and with fabrics that shift easily.
After sewing, the basting comes out. Cut it every few centimetres and pull the pieces out one by one instead of tugging at one long thread.
It is practical for fittings too. A basted garment can be tried on, altered and taken apart again without the seam lines suffering.

Why not ordinary sewing thread for basting?

How do I remove basting properly?
