That is exactly the difference from sewing thread. A firm thread would have to be unpicked and leaves marks when pulled; basting thread tears before it damages the fabric.

Basting pays off wherever pins are not enough: on curves, at matching points, in set in sleeves and with fabrics that shift easily.

After sewing, the basting comes out. Cut it every few centimetres and pull the pieces out one by one instead of tugging at one long thread.

It is practical for fittings too. A basted garment can be tried on, altered and taken apart again without the seam lines suffering.

Why not ordinary sewing thread for basting?

Because it is too firm. Pulling it out drags threads and leaves marks, and unpicking it risks cutting into the fabric.

How do I remove basting properly?

Cut it every few centimetres and pull the short pieces out individually. One long thread gathers the fabric and can drag threads with it.

When is basting worth the effort?

On curves, set in sleeves, slippery fabrics and before fittings. Wherever pins do not hold securely enough or would get in the way.
