A slider that no longer closes is usually worn: the two jaws have spread and no longer press the teeth together. Careful squeezing with pliers sometimes helps, but replacement is the lasting fix.

When buying, the coil size matters, usually given as a number – 3, 5 or 8, for instance. A slider of the wrong size will not run or springs open again.

For zip by the metre you need sliders and end stops. How many sliders depends on the project: a bag meant to open from both sides needs two, fed on in opposite directions.

Fitting works most easily when both coil ends are neatly aligned. Flat pliers and a little patience replace any special tool.

My zip keeps opening again — what can I do?

Usually the slider is worn. Squeeze it carefully with pliers; if that does not last, replace it with a new one in the same size.

How do I know which slider size I need?

The size is usually stamped on the back of the old slider, otherwise the width of the closed coil helps. A slider of the wrong size will not grip properly.

How many sliders does a bag need?

Two if it should open from both sides – they are fed on in opposite directions. For a simple opening, one is enough.
