Sulky Solvy – the topping for high-pile fabrics

Solvy is a water-soluble film just 25 microns thick. It goes on top of high-pile fabrics such as towelling so the stitches do not sink into the pile, and washes out completely afterwards.

On towelling, fleece and velour an embroidery design easily disappears into the pile: loops push up between the stitches, outlines look blurred and fine detail is lost altogether. A topping lies over the pile and holds it down until the stitches are in place.

Solvy is the thinnest answer for that. Lay the film on the fabric and hoop both together. After stitching, tear the remains away roughly; whatever sits inside the stitches dissolves in water by itself — slowly in cold, faster in warm.

For free-standing lace, where no fabric lies under the design at all, this thin film is not enough. Reach for the sturdy Ultra Solvy or the fabric-like Fabri Solvy instead.

Why do I need a topping?

For every fabric with pile or texture: towelling, fleece, velour, waffle piqué. Without a topping the stitches sink in and the design looks blurred, because the loops push between the threads.

How do I remove the remains?

Tear them away roughly, then wash them out. In cold water the film dissolves slowly, in warm water much faster. On delicate fabrics dab the spot several times rather than soaking the whole piece.

Can I stitch free-standing lace with it?

Solvy is too thin for that. Free-standing designs need a film that can be hooped on its own and take the pull — Ultra Solvy or Fabri Solvy are made for it.
