In brushing, the inner face is mechanically raised. The resulting fibre layer holds air and keeps you warm without making the fabric much thicker – the same effect as in a classic sweatshirt.

Solid fabric is the quiet partner to patterned sweat and panels. It suits sleeves, yokes, hoods and pockets and can be finished neatly with cuffing in the same shade.

Sew with a jersey needle and a stretch stitch. Wash the fabric before cutting, because brushed material opens up slightly in the first wash and shrinks a little.

How do I tell winter sweat from summer sweat?

By the inner face. Winter sweat is fleecy and brushed, summer sweat shows fine loops. Brushed fabric keeps you noticeably warmer and feels slightly thicker.

Does the pile flatten over time?

A little, mainly where the fabric rubs. Wash cool and without fabric softener, and the inside stays soft and the warmth is preserved for a long time.

Is winter sweat suitable for jackets?

For light sweat jackets, yes. It is not windproof – in a cold wind, softshell or a lined jacket is the better choice.
