In jacquard the pattern is created during weaving, not printing. The reverse shows the same motif in inverted colours, and because the colour sits in the yarn, the pattern cannot wash away.

The weaving technique gives the fabric structure and body. It adds slightly more bulk than smooth poplin and therefore suits skirts, dresses with volume, jackets, cushions and table linen.

The reversible character is a practical advantage: on turn backs, lapels or bands you can deliberately show the reverse and gain a second colourway without needing another fabric.

Because the threads can span long distances, they catch easily on rough edges. Finish the cut edges promptly and work with a sharp needle so no threads are pulled.

How does jacquard differ from a print?

The jacquard pattern is formed from coloured yarns during weaving, while a print sits only on the surface. Jacquard therefore shows the negative on the reverse and stays sharp after many washes.

Can I use both sides?

Yes. Face and reverse show the same pattern with the colours swapped. That can be used deliberately, for bands, pocket flaps or turn backs.

Does jacquard snag easily?

It can, where long threads run across the reverse. Watch for rough edges and jewellery when wearing, and finish the cut edges neatly.
