Woven cotton is stable along its length and only gives on the bias. That way a garment keeps its shape instead of stretching out over time.

The choice ranges from light qualities for blouses to firmer ones for skirts and home decor. A look at the weight helps: light fabric drapes softly and is more see through, firmer fabric stands away from the body and covers better.

Wash before cutting, as cotton shrinks. Sew with a universal needle and straight stitch; finish the edges with zigzag or an overlocker so they do not fray.

How can I tell whether a cotton fabric suits clothing?

By handle and weight. Light, softly draping fabric suits blouses and dresses, firmer fabric skirts, trousers and jackets. Very firm qualities such as canvas are intended more for bags and home decor.

Why does cotton fray so much?

Because the threads in the weave are held only by the binding. At the cut edge they have nothing left to hold them. Finish every edge that will take strain in the finished piece.

Can I dye plain cotton?

In principle yes, provided it has no special finish. Expect the new colour to mix with the existing one: a blue fabric dyed yellow turns green, not yellow.
