Printed denim carries the motif on its face, the reverse stays in the base shade. Woven designs, by contrast, appear on both sides, because they are formed from coloured yarns.

Because the fabric is firm, a pattern reads more calmly on it than on flowing material. Large motifs should still be placed deliberately so they do not end awkwardly at seams or pockets.

Handle patterned denim like plain: jeans needle, longer stitch, trim seam allowances at thick spots. Press printed fabric from the reverse so the print does not become shiny.

Is patterned denim as robust as plain?

Yes, the base fabric is the same. Only with prints can the surface lighten a little over time, while woven designs stay unchanged even after many washes.

How do I combine patterned denim?

Best with solid fabrics that pick up one colour from the pattern. The result stays calm and the design gets the space it needs.

Is patterned denim suitable for bags?

Very much so. The firmness makes the bag stand, and the pattern replaces any further decoration. Only reinforce the base and handles if the bag will carry heavy loads.
