Description

Matching points are where two cut pieces have to meet as they get joined. Usually people snip there by scissors — occasionally too deep, right up against their seam. A notcher removes a small piece from that edge instead.

Each notch stays visible, surviving a wash before sewing, vanishing later inside its seam allowance. Unlike chalk it never rubs away; unlike a marking pen it never shows through pale fabric.

It works through several layers, so doubled fabric gets both pieces marked at once. Over very thick qualities notch separately, otherwise your impression turns uneven.

What Notcher for Pattern Markings is suitable for

  • Marking matching points over cut pieces without cutting into a seam allowance.
  • Flagging waist centres, sleeve heads, dart points permanently.
  • Cut pieces washed before sewing — every notch survives.
  • Working over pale fabric where chalk or pen would stay visible.

Frequently asked questions

Why not simply snip by scissors?

Because a snip easily runs too deep, reaching right into your seam. A notcher removes one defined piece from that edge, keeping depth identical every time.

How many layers will it handle?

Doubled fabric usually passes without trouble, marking both pieces at once. Thick qualities such as boiled wool or plush deserve notching separately.

Will a notch show over my finished piece?

No; it sits inside your seam allowance, vanishing as pieces get joined. Working very narrow allowances, notch shallower, or mark only along an outer edge.

Which fabrics suit it badly?

Loosely woven fabric may fray around a notch, letting it grow larger than intended. There tailor's chalk or a thread marking stitch serves better.
