A plastic ruler with a continuous scale guides the blade and steps off measurements in one pass. Made in the size 20 cm. Sold as a single item. Produced from plastic.
Marking the seam allowance at the same time removes guesswork at the machine and hits the edge reliably. For alterations to finished pieces the measurement shows how much width is really missing or left over. Two measurements at different points reveal whether the length really lies straight — which saves unpicking later. Anyone sewing regularly likes to keep such notions in duplicate.

Frequently asked questions
How do I measure accurately?
Lay the fabric flat, do not pull, and check at two points. Knits deceive most: under tension they measure several centimetres more than they hold in the finished piece.
How do I mark an even hem?
Set dots at short intervals along the measure and join them. Measuring at only two points inevitably gives a wave on a curved hem. Finally, pin the hem and check it once more from the outside.
How do I clean it?
Wipe with a damp cloth, no scouring agents. Chalk dust and lint otherwise settle in the figures and make the scale unreadable. Let it dry before it goes back in the drawer, or it collects dust.
What if it slips?
Small silicone stoppers underneath hold the tool in place. Otherwise it already helps to lay the second hand flat instead of using fingertips. A sheet of sandpaper under the ruler also holds it surprisingly well.
