A firm piping in a jersey seam acts like a brake: the seam can no longer stretch and tears at its weakest point. Elastic tape solves this because it moves with the fabric.

While sewing, guide the tape gently rather than pulling it. Stretched too hard, the seam draws in later and the edge ripples.

Many qualities have a lustrous finish, which is used deliberately on lingerie and sportswear. The narrow line sets an accent without adding bulk.

Sew with a jersey needle and a stretch stitch. A zipper foot guides the needle close along the cord so the piping shows evenly.

Good to know

Why not simply use firm piping?

Because it blocks the stretch. In a jersey seam the tape cannot give, so the seam tears at its weakest point or the garment can no longer be put on.

How much may I stretch the tape?

As little as possible. Guide it rather than pull it. Stretched too hard, the seam draws in after sewing and the edge ripples.

Is it suitable for swimwear?

Yes, provided the quality is chlorine resistant. Check the details on the article – not every elastic tape tolerates chlorine and salt water in the long run.
