Dressmaking shears have long blades and rest flat on the table while cutting. The fabric stays where it is and does not distort. For long straight cuts they are unbeatable, as they are for thick layers.

Small embroidery scissors are meant for threads, seam allowances and corners. Their pointed blades reach places where large shears would be too clumsy. Pinking shears cut a zigzag edge that slows fraying on woven fabric.

Keep fabric scissors strictly away from paper: paper blunts the blades far faster than cloth does. A pair used only for fabric will stay sharp for years.

Good to know

Why should I not cut paper with fabric scissors?

Paper contains mineral fillers that act like fine abrasive and blunt the edge. Blunt scissors push the fabric ahead of them instead of cutting through it cleanly.

What are pinking shears for?

They cut a zigzag edge on which woven fabric frays more slowly. For seam allowances that is a quick alternative to finishing, though it does not replace an overlocked seam on fabrics that fray badly.

Which scissors do I need for corners and threads?

Small embroidery scissors with pointed blades. They let you get close to the seam, trim threads short and reduce seam allowances in corners without damaging the fabric.
