Gütermann Knopflochgarn

A buttonhole is opened and closed constantly – its edge has to hold up. Buttonhole thread is thicker and firmer than sewing thread and therefore lays down a noticeably denser bead.

The denser bead protects the cut edge. A buttonhole sewn with ordinary thread frays at the corners after a few months, while the stronger surround stays neat for longer.

As with denim thread, the thick thread belongs in the needle while ordinary thread stays in the bobbin. Otherwise the bead turns too heavy and the buttonhole draws in.

The thread also suits attaching buttons, especially on jackets and coats. A button under heavy strain holds considerably longer with strong thread.

It can be used for topstitching too, on edges and pockets. The stitches read more distinctly than with ordinary thread and set a deliberate accent.

Good to know

Why not simply use sewing thread for buttonholes?

Because the bead is thinner and protects the cut edge less. On frequently used buttonholes ordinary thread frays at the corners, while strong thread lasts much longer.

Does buttonhole thread go in the bobbin too?

No. Keep ordinary thread in the bobbin, or the bead turns too heavy and the buttonhole draws in until the button no longer passes through.

Can I attach buttons with it?

Yes, that is a sensible second use. On jackets and coats especially, where a button takes heavy strain, strong thread lasts far longer than fine.
