Sulky Thermofilm – for fabrics that must not get wet

Thermofilm is 30 microns thin, transparent and dissolves under heat rather than in water. For fabrics that must not get wet this is the way out: after stitching you remove the remains with a hot iron.

Some fabrics never forgive water: leather and imitation leather, coated goods, felt and silk react with stains, rings or distortion. That rules out the usual water-soluble topping — and yet the design still needs a layer that keeps the surface smooth.

Thermofilm solves this with warmth. Lay the film on the fabric and hoop both together. After stitching, the remains come away under a hot iron when you move it over the spot in small circles.

The film is not meant for high-pile fabrics such as towelling — it does not lie close enough on the pile there. Where the fabric tolerates water, the water-soluble Solvy remains the better choice for that job.

Which fabrics call for Thermofilm?

Anything that should not get wet: leather and imitation leather, coated fabrics, felt and delicate silk. Water leaves rings or distorts the surface there, while heat does not.

How do I remove the remains?

Move a hot iron over the spot in small circles. The film shrinks back and lifts off the stitches. A pressing cloth keeps residue away from the soleplate.

Why not on towelling?

Because the thin film does not lie close enough on the pile, and the loops still push between the stitches. A water-soluble topping works better there, provided the fabric may get wet.
