Jersey is a knitted fabric and stretches across the grain. That is why it sits softly against the body and needs no zips or darts to fit.

With stripes it pays to look at how they run: if you cut front, back and sleeves so the stripes match, you can see the difference immediately on the finished piece. Allow a little more length than the pattern states.

Sew with a jersey needle and a stretch stitch or an overlocker. The cut edge likes to curl; a glue stick or clips help to hold it flat while you put pieces together.

How do I match stripes when cutting?

Fold the fabric double and line the stripes up exactly along the fold. Mark on the pattern pieces which stripe the side seam starts on, and the lines will meet later.

How much extra fabric should I allow?

For narrow stripes one extra repeat is usually enough, meaning the height of one stripe sequence. With wide stripes or many pieces it can be more; calculate generously, as leftovers work well for cuffing.

Does jersey curl at the edges?

Yes, that comes with knitted fabric. It disappears as soon as the seam is closed and the edge finished. When cutting it helps to let the fabric lie flat instead of pulling it.
