How do I sew a zip neatly?

What if its slider blocks my seam?
Stop short, leaving your needle down, lift that foot, sliding it past along your sewn side. Carry on afterwards — your seam then stays even along its whole length.
May a zip be shortened?
Across spiral zips, yes: cut below, securing those teeth using firm hand stitches, or a fresh stopper. On metal zips, remove teeth individually rather than cutting.
How should a zip be cared for?
Wash it closed, so those teeth never distort. Running stiffly, a little candle wax, or soap along its teeth helps — oil instead soaks into cloth, leaving marks.
