The print sits on the right side, the reverse stays lighter. Because jersey is a knitted fabric, a motif distorts slightly when stretched – with large prints, keep an eye on the fit.

For choosing motifs one simple rule applies: the smaller the garment, the smaller the pattern. A large print that works on an adult shirt fills the entire front of a child's size.

Handle printed jersey like plain: jersey needle, stretch stitch, wash before cutting. Press from the reverse so the print does not become shiny or stick to the iron.

Good to know

Does the print distort when worn?

Not at a normal fit. If the fabric is stretched hard, at tight areas for instance, a motif can warp slightly. For large prints, choose designs with a little ease.

How do I plan large motifs when cutting?

Lay the pattern pieces out before cutting and shift them until the motif sits well. Allow a little more fabric than the pattern states.

Can I combine printed jersey with cuffing?

Yes, that is the usual combination. Pick up a colour from the print; the finish then looks deliberate rather than accidental, even if it does not match exactly.
