Many of these prints contain writing or numbers and are therefore directional. Lay all pattern pieces the same way so letters do not stand on their heads.

Because the motifs are usually small and scattered, there is hardly any waste. That makes them practical for small projects too: drawstring bags, pencil cases, cushions or appliqué can be made from leftovers.

Handle the fabric like any cotton jersey. For bags and cases, interfacing is worthwhile, as jersey alone is too soft to hold its shape.

Good to know

Is jersey suitable for drawstring bags?

With interfacing, yes. Fuse a light interfacing and the bag keeps its shape. Without it, jersey stretches lengthways under the weight.

What should I watch for with letter motifs?

The orientation. Writing is always directional, so all pieces have to lie the same way. Also check whether words get cut through at seams.

Do school motifs suit older children too?

Graphic versions with pencils, formulas or drawings, yes. Very playful prints with colourful letters suit the first school years better.
