Markings stay visible as long as they are needed and then go with water, an iron or a brush. When transferring from pattern to fabric, the marking decides whether the pieces will match later. What has been marked should be sewn before long; if the cut pieces lie around for weeks, some lines fade by themselves. Anyone sewing regularly likes to keep such notions in duplicate. These notions fit any sewing drawer and come to hand quickly.

Does the marking come off again?
Depending on the type with water, with heat or by brushing out. The pack says which applies; a test on a hidden spot shows it within a minute on your own fabric.
Which fabrics does it suit?
Most wovens and knits. On very absorbent or coated goods every marking behaves differently, so a test on a scrap stays the safest route. On velvet and towelling it is better to mark on the reverse.
What works on dark fabrics?
A light marking — white chalk or a pen with a pale lead. On dark cloth any dark line disappears as soon as the fabric folds.
May I iron over a marking?
Better not while it is still needed: heat can fix some lines and erase others at once. Sew first, press afterwards is the safe order.
