Description
Ordinary shears are built for the right hand: the upper blade sits on the right, and you can see the cutting line as you work. Used left handed, that same blade hides the line and thumb pressure forces the blades apart. These shears reverse both. Blade order and handle are mirrored, the line stays visible, and the pressure of the hand closes the blades instead of opening them. They measure 20 cm and belong to the KATANA range. Meant for fabric — paper blunts the edge quickly.
What Dressmaking Shears 20 cm, left handed is suitable for
- Cutting out left handed
- Cutting pattern pieces
- Several layers in one pass
- Curves and straight edges
Frequently asked questions
What is different about left handed shears?
The blades are swapped and the handle is mirrored. The left hand therefore sees the cutting line, and natural thumb pressure presses the blades together rather than apart. Together that gives a clean cut.
Can I use them right handed?
Technically yes, sensibly no. In the right hand the upper blade hides the line and the pressure opens the blades slightly. Fabric then slides between them instead of being parted.
Which fabrics do they suit?
Anything you would cut by hand: cotton, jersey, linen, light wool. For very thick layers or coated fabrics a rotary cutter and mat is the more comfortable answer.
How do they stay sharp?
Use them on fabric only, store them dry and oil the pivot now and then. They can be sharpened as well, but by someone who knows left handed shears.
