Description

Steel grey is a mid grey with a slight blue cast. It reads cooler and more technical than a neutral grey. Tooth length comes to 60 cm. Lay it against your piece before cutting and you will see at once whether the opening sits right.

These metal teeth carry a rainbow coating and shift tone with the light. Here the fastener is deliberately the focal point. If the slider sticks later, fabric is usually caught between the teeth — ease it out rather than forcing it. A little candle wax on the teeth gets it running smoothly again.

What Separating Zip 60 cm Steel Grey is suitable for

  • Waistcoats, because it lies smoothly into the front edge.
  • Between-season jackets, because they open quickly.
  • Rain jackets, because a separating fastener frees the whole front.

Sewing tips

Frequently asked questions

How do I align both sides?

Lay both halves level and tack before sewing. Let one shift and your jacket stands apart at the hem — with the fastener closed, that shows at once.

Metal or plastic — which is better?

Plastic is lighter, more flexible and quieter; metal reads stronger and takes more strain. Sweat jackets do fine with plastic; for coats and workwear, metal serves better.

How should I store fasteners?

Flat and closed, ideally sorted by length. Stored folded, the tape keeps that crease, and you see it later along the sewn-in edge.

How far should the topstitching sit?

About three to five millimetres beside the teeth. Too close and the slider brushes your seam; too far and the fabric throws a ripple over the tape.
