Fine rib is the narrowest of the cuffing ribs. It adds hardly any bulk and therefore suits light shirts, dresses and children's clothing, where a coarse rib would look too heavy.

The usual rule applies to the length: measure the opening and cut the cuffing noticeably shorter, usually by a fifth to a quarter. While attaching it the cuffing is stretched and the fabric stays flat — that is what creates the tension that holds later.

Sew with an overlocker or a stretch stitch on a domestic machine. A jersey needle prevents skipped stitches, and when pressing, the rib should not be pulled apart.

How much shorter should I cut the cuffing?

As a guide: around a fifth to a quarter shorter than the opening. The stretchier the fabric and the more tension you want, the shorter. When in doubt, pin it in place and try it first.

What is the difference between fine rib and coarse rib?

The width of the rib. Fine rib is narrowly ribbed, adds little bulk and stays discreet. Coarse rib shows distinctly wider grooves and makes the finish a visible feature.

Which needle do I need for cuffing?

A jersey or stretch needle. Its rounded tip pushes the loops aside instead of piercing them. A universal needle easily causes holes and skipped stitches.
