The wide rib brings structure to the piece. Where a fine cuffing merely closes an edge, coarse rib makes a feature of it — which suits sweatshirts, bomber jackets and anything meant to look deliberately sporty.

The fabric is also firmer. It takes more strain at sleeve and hem and distorts less when a garment is put on and taken off often. On lightweight fabric, by contrast, it quickly looks too heavy.

As with any cuffing, cut it shorter than the opening. Because coarse rib is firmer, take off slightly less than you would with fine rib, otherwise the finish becomes too tight.

When should I choose coarse rib over fine rib?

When the finish is meant to be seen and the garment is substantial enough to carry it: sweatshirts, jackets, joggers. On light shirts the wide rib quickly looks too heavy.

Does coarse rib lose its shape over time?

Less than fine fabric, because the rib is worked more firmly. What matters is not to overstretch the cuffing while attaching it and to dry it flat so it keeps its shape.

Can I use coarse rib for necklines too?

You can, but it will stand out. On a sweatshirt that is often the point. If the neckline should lie flat, a finer cuffing is the quieter choice.
