Description

Smoke blue carries a clear grey cast, reading calmer than a clean sky blue. This is that shade you can wear for years without tiring of it.

Muslin is a double gauze: two fine woven layers joined at many points. That is where its typical crinkle comes from, and its soft handle too — this cloth lies airily against skin without clinging. Weight 130 g/m², width 130 cm, 100 % cotton, by the metre from 0.2 metres. Wash on a gentle cycle at 30 degrees; pressing, bleaching, tumble drying are ruled out by its care symbols. No drawback there: that crinkle is wanted, and a smoothly pressed muslin loses exactly what makes it. One point for quantity: residual shrinkage runs around 10 %, so add that when ordering and wash once before cutting.

What Muslin Double Gauze Jenke Plain Smoke Blue is suitable for

  • Shirts and blouses, because this shade stays restrained.
  • Swaddle cloths, because smoke blue reads soft, neutral.
  • Pairings with beige, because both stay muted.

Frequently asked questions

How should I hem it?

A narrow double-turned hem looks tidiest, keeping that edge calm. On scarves you can roll-hem with an overlocker instead — faster, and it reads lighter.

How is muslin best sewn?

With a fine universal needle, straight stitch, little tension. It shifts easily, so plenty of pins or a walking foot pay off. Finish your edges, because they fray readily.

How much fabric do I need?

At this width, two square muslin cloths come out of one length side by side. For a summer dress reckon roughly two metres; your sewing pattern states it more exactly.

Is muslin suitable for baby things?

It is the classic for burp cloths, swaddles and light summer pieces, being soft and growing softer with every wash. Wash it first, so it absorbs well from the start.
