Panels are sold in fixed sizes. The stated length refers to the whole motif including its border; how much of it you actually use is up to your project.

In patchwork a panel often serves as a centre piece with blocks set around it. It also works well as the front of a cushion cover or as a bag with a picture.

Before cutting, check whether the motif sits straight on the grain. Prints occasionally run slightly askew; in that case follow the motif rather than the selvedge, otherwise the finished piece looks crooked.

Good to know

How large is a panel?

That is stated with each article; pieces are usually about the width of the motif. Include the border if you need a particular area, and allow seam allowances on top.

What if the print sits askew?

Align your cut with the motif, not the grain. A slightly crooked image is immediately obvious in the finished piece, while a minimally off grain cut hardly matters.

Can I join several panels?

Yes, that is common in quilts. Make sure the motifs share the same orientation and plan narrow strips between the panels so the images do not butt directly against each other.
