Grobripp Bündchen

Coarse rib shows distinctly wider grooves than fine rib. The finish becomes a visible design element – typical of sweatshirts, bomber jackets and joggers. The fabric is firmer than fine rib and keeps its shape even on cuffs that see heavy use.

Because more material sits in the rib, coarse rib is firmer and heavier. It withstands the pull that arises at waist and sleeve when a garment is put on and taken off often, and loses its shape more slowly.

This firmness has a downside: on light shirts the wide rib quickly looks clumsy. Check whether the main fabric is substantial enough to carry the finish.

When cutting, take off a little less than with fine fabric, because coarse rib contracts more strongly. Sew with a jersey needle and a stretch stitch.

How much shorter should I cut coarse rib?

A little less than with fine rib, so roughly a sixth to a fifth of the opening. The fabric pulls in strongly on its own; cut too short, the finish becomes uncomfortably tight.

Does coarse rib suit jersey?

Only to a degree. A thin jersey shirt looks unbalanced with a wide rib. With sweat, French terry and firm knits, coarse rib works very well.

Does the wide rib wear out faster?

No, quite the opposite. The firmer knit takes more wear than fine fabric. All that matters is not washing it too hot and drying it flat.
