The twill binding makes the fabric firm and supple at once. It is hard wearing, softens with every wearing and develops the marks of use that make denim what it is.

When buying, check the elastane content. Pure denim holds its shape perfectly but does not give; stretch denim wears more comfortably and suits closer fitting trousers.

Sew with a jeans needle, as the dense fabric needs a strong point. At thick spots it helps to trim the seam allowances or support the machine with a levelling tool.

Do I need a special needle for denim?

Yes, a jeans needle in size 90 to 100. Its reinforced point penetrates the dense twill without bending. With a universal needle, needles break easily at thick spots.

Does denim bleed colour?

Dark fabric can release colour in the first few washes. Wash new denim separately and inside out, and the colour stays deep for longer.

What does stretch denim mean?

Elastane is blended into the weave, usually only a few per cent. The fabric gives way and suits closer designs, but loses a little stability compared with pure denim.
